A manufacturer of fine china in Staffordshire, England. The entrepreneurial potter Josiah Wedgwood (1730–95) founded the first factory in 1759. The company specialized in the production of  earthenware, stoneware, and (later) porcelain. Wedgwood’s most famous product is jasperware, a matte-finish stoneware with relief decoration in contrasting colors, designed to look like ancient Roman cameo glass and featuring Neoclassical motifs.
