A rinceau (pl. rinceaux) is an ornmental motif consisting of a sinuous vine with scrolls of acanthus-like leaves branching out at regular intervals. Rinceaux appear frequently in ancient Greek and Roman  friezes and mosaic borders. The motif was also popular in Renaissance and Neoclassical architecture and decorative art. Pronunciation here.
