An abbreviation of “Neo-Geometric Conceptualism”, Neo-Geo is a term applied to the work of a group of artists active in New York in the 1980s. The term was first used in reference to a 1986 exhibition at the Sonnabend Gallery that included the work of Ashley Bickerton, Peter Halley and Meyer Vaisman. Although they worked in a variety of styles, Neo-Geo artists shared a cool, ironic approach, in contrast to the then-dominant style of Neo-Expressionism, with its emphasis on emotion and psychology.
