mansard roof

A four-sided, double-sloped roof, often pierced by dormer windows in the steeper, lower slope. The steep roofline and windows allow for additional living space in the upper floor of a building. The mansard roof was named after the French Baroque architect François Mansart (1598-1666), who popularized it.
