(Also known as Verona green). The mossy-green pigment green earth can be made from two different but closely related clay minerals, celadonite and glauconite. Celadonite is found in small deposits in volcanic rock in the area of Verona, Italy. It was one of the first pigments identified from an ancient shop excavated in Pompeii in 1809. In medieval Italian paintings green earth was used extensively as an underpainting for flesh tones (a practice recommended by Cennino Cennini in his Libro dell’arte of ca. 1390). Although it is still prepared today, green earth it has not been widely used as a pigment since the Renaissance. Web resources here and here.
