A work of art created with the intention of deceiving or defrauding. A forger may re-use materials contemporary with the supposed date of the forgery, such as a stretched canvas that has been stripped of a old painting of little value, or he may use new materials that are aged artificially. Forgeries can be detected by stylistic analysis (see connoisseur) or by scientific methods of materials analysis, such as X-ray fluorescence, infrared reflectography and carbon-14 dating.
